A Trace to Start
A Trace to Start is a solo exhibition by Italian artist Nicoletta Gatti, presented at Robertaebasta London from 5 November to 15 December 2026.
Bringing together fifteen paintings and textile works, the exhibition explores Gatti's ongoing investigation into line, gesture and material, examining how form emerges through the interaction between artistic intention and the physical properties of the surface.
At the centre of Gatti's practice lies the act of tracing a line. Working with materials including raw linen and jute, the artist allows texture, resistance and the absorption of pigment to shape the development of each work. Marks, incisions and layered interventions reveal the passage of time and the movement of the artist's hand.
Across the different series presented, the line evolves from an open and continuous gesture into more fragmented, introspective and organic configurations. In her textile works, it takes on a physical dimension, becoming thread and extending beyond the painted surface.
Rather than following a predetermined image, Gatti's work explores form as something discovered through the creative process, suspended between abstraction, memory and recognition.
